Keep Your Composure


One of the most dangerous situations that can arise while off-roading is when the driver loses his or her composure when caught in a stressful or difficult position. Loosing ones composure will not get you unstuck but can wind up getting you hurt!


When your Jeep gets stuck regardless of the terrain – upright on stable ground, in mud, wedged rock climbing, etc. you must always use the proper equipment and techniques to recover from the situation at hand. Not doing so can result in serious injuries and worse, death.

First off know what recovery equipment is, what it is capable of, what type to use for what situations, and how to use it properly. There are distinct differences between a tow strap and a recovery strap. Tow straps are used for what their name implies, towing a vehicle from point A to point B under normal terrain. They have no stretch or give to them and have metal hooks at the end. If used in a recovery situation and the strap was to break, the metal hook at the end can easily come flying back and cause serious injury if not death upon impact on a person.

Recovery straps do allow for give and stretch and can absorb and smooth out tension created during a recovery. They are rated 20,000 ponds or more and have sewn in loops at the end lessening the risk of serious injuries. You should never use any form of metal hook or clevises connected to your recovery straps. You should never stand in the potential path of a recovery strap in use. If it does snap, it will come flying back at a high rate. It is smart to lay a heavy large blanket over the middle portion recovery strap while in use that way if it does happen to snap there will be less chance of a fling back effect. There is no substitute for safety and going off and losing your composure and not thinking before trying to perform a recovery can result in disaster.

  1. I never go off road by myself. If I get stuck, I call in a professional. We have a couple in the club I belong to. You are so right in saying serious injury can result if you don’t know what you are doing. I’ve seen it happen before and it could have been prevented if the guy had used a little common sense.

  2. I’ve seen a couple of really bad accidents that occurred because the driver panicked. Each of them could have been avoided if they had just kept their cool. They tried to over compensate and actually caused the damage themselves.

  3. Composure is really important and that’s something beginner’s have to learn as they go. Over confidence in a beginner can have dire consequences. Thanks for making that point.

  4. You find loss of composure usually goes hand in hand with new off road drivers. It’s a learned process for sure. Just knowing that you should keep your composure is not enough. Practice is the only thing that puts you where you need to be.
