The 2018 Jeep Wrangler JL has been spotted out testing in the wild, with a few new design details starting to emerge! Our friends over at JLWranglerForums.com where the first to report on these spy shots, giving us a detailed look at the new Wrangler being put through it’s paces. This isn’t the first time the 2018 Wrangler was spied testing, but it does add to our growing list of confirmed changes and design updates.

2018 Jeep Wrangler Exterior Changes
Right off the bat, one of the first things these spy shots have confirmed for us is the return of the round style headlights for 2018. Seen through the transparent mesh covering, the round headlights are tucked in right alongside the iconic Jeep Grille, which appears to be more angled than it was on the JK model (supposedly designed for improved aerodynamics on the JL).
A little less obvious, but still noticeable, are the new light strips above the front wheel arches. Using a thin strip of LED lights, these lights will glow orange when the turn signals are engaged; they may do more than that, but that is uncertain at this time.
2018 Wrangler Bumper and Hood
Appearing in other spy shots as well as these, is a larger front bumper on the JL Wrangler. Rumor has it that the larger front bumper is to help meet increased safety standards around the world. However, knowing most Jeepers, an aftermarket JL Wrangler bumper is going to be towards the top of the mods list.
Aside from the front bumper, it was also noted by a forum user, that the front hood appears to have gotten longer on the Wrangler. The added inches to the bonnet is supposedly to better accommodate the new 8-speed automatic transmission that will be debuting the 2018 Wrangler.
2018 Jeep Wrangler Interior Changes
The sneaky spy photographer who captured these images (Glen Paulina of KGP Spy Photography) managed to nail a few shots of the interior of this test mule. The interior of this 2018 test mule was almost identical to the current JK interior, with very subtle changes to certain lines. It seems like the new Wrangler will see a lot of carry-over for the interior, but there is still quite a bit of time for FCA to update it.
2018 Wrangler Transmission and Shifter
One of the shots nabbed of the interior captured the JL Wrangler’s new shifter, which will be mated to the new 8-Speed ZF sourced transmission. The pictures show that the shifter in the test mule is the same shifter as the one in the Dodge Challenger and Charger, which both use the 8-Speed ZF Automatic.
The new 8-Speed transmission should yield huge increases in fuel efficiency, especially over the old 5-speed Mercedes unit that was used in 2012 and newer JK Wranglers. There has been a lot of talk/rumors around the new 8-Speed auto being the only transmission option for the 2018 Wrangler, eliminating the 6-Speed manual option.
