FCA Boss Sergio Marchionne spoke at a corporate media event during the North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) and gave some insight on the 2018 JL Wrangler.Speaking to a crowd of reporters, Marchionne confirmed the production plans for the 2018 Wrangler at the Toledo Assembly plant, and gave a few insights to next generation Wrangler.
Unfortunately, it sounds like we are still some time away from seeing the JL Wrangler without any camouflage and in its production ready state. Marchionne said that the grand reveal may have to wait until the 2017 LA Auto Show, which is slated to take place from November 29-30, which is the same month the production is supposed to start for the 2018 Wrangler.
Marchionne recognizes the fact of how hard it is to keep the next generation Wrangler hidden for so long, commenting, “can’t cover them up with masking tape. The car [Wrangler] is too distinctive. We may show it in Los Angeles in November and then launch it officially here in January.”
While that seems like a whole other lifetime until the LA Auto Show, it is only 10 months away at this point. With that said, I still am going to hold out hope for an earlier reveal, maybe at the Easter Jeep Safari or another one-off event for the 2018 Jeep Wrangler. In the meantime, we will have to continue sustaining our desire for the JL Wrangler with spy photos and info leaks.
Sergio Marchionne opened up and discussed some of this thoughts on the 2018 Wrangler. Marchionne commented that the new Wranglers is a “perfect car. It fixes all the problems with the old car and it keeps the identity of the Wrangler.” It’s exciting from an enthusiast’s perspective to hear this as it sounds like they really tried to enhance what was already there while not diverting away from the iconic design and performance that has made the Wrangler as popular as it is.
When asked about the JT Wrangler pickup truck, Marichonne continued, “It’s built on a Wrangler base and that’s all I need to say. People have been waiting for that vehicle for years.” Marchionne didn’t go into that much more about the 2019 JT Wrangler Pickup Truck, but we still have some more time to go before it goes into production.
